This day-long class will cover the basics of bowl carving. We begin with the log then hew and shape the blank. We’ll walk through the important aspects of what sort of wood is best for bowls, how to choose an appropriate blank, and how to think about design. We will then commence to working with the axe, adze, and gouge to create our roughed out blank. Time will be spent on axe, adze, and gouge technique, the importance of drying, and how to finish carve the bowl once dried out. This class is fun, demanding, and a wonderful workout. If you’re like me, and spoons are difficult to carve, come learn how to make a hole in some wood and turn it into a bowl.
