Dala horses are a traditional Swedish craft originating from the region of Dalarna. Students will take a sawn pine blank and learn to carve facets and remove saw marks. They will have the chance to look at photos of dala horses and, if time allows, paint them. The focus of the course is to teach students safe knife handling techniques. Students will learn 4 to 5 safe knife grips and how to read the grain on a piece of wood to get clean cuts. We will also discuss how to address beginner carving problems such as removing rough spots, carving across the grain and recognizing when your holding hand may be in danger.
