Kolrosing with Liesl Chatman

Liesl will fly in from Minnesota to teach a fabulous Scandinavian technique called Kolrosing (coal-rose-ing), where pigments are added to finely etched line drawings to create lovely images on spoons.You may carve on your own spoon, spreader or similar item if it has been carved from fine-grained wood like aspen, birch, basswood, maple, sycamore or beech and treat it with walnut oil at least three days prior to the class.

Materials and Fees

You’ll need to purchase at least a small kolrosing kit for a materials fee of $15 that students can keep (small squeeze bottle of walnut oil, small squeeze bottle of half and half tung oil, small vile of cinnamon, clear 6″ grid ruler, and black wing pencil; dowels, tongue depressors etc to practice on). There may also be additional materials for a large kit. There may also be some prepared spoons available, rates will vary. Students can also borrow a kolrosing knife from Liesl’s class set or purchase a new one from her. Plain new ones are $30; fancy ones (kolrosed) are $55, and a new fine point design with price TBD. Material fees should be paid directly to the instructor, electronic payments will be available. You may want to bring reading glasses, a magnifying glass or your own optivisor. There will be two half day sessions and one full day session for folks who want more in-depth training.
