Stool Making with Terry Ratliff (Part 1)

April 23 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Stool Making with Terry Ratliff

This is a 2-day workshop and must be purchased through the Deluxe Package.

Post and rung stools are a great way to learn rustic chair making techniques. In this two day class Terry will guide you on your wet to dry joinery journey. There are two options for seats on the stools, one is to use slats and the other is hickory bark. Hickory bark is an amazingly beautiful and strong material. Gathering bark is time intensive, but less so when the sap is rising. Hopefully the sap will be rising this year by mid April so you all can play with this wonderful material. Hickory bark for weaving is made from the inner bark of hickory trees, seats made from hickory bark can last 100 years.

Tools for the class will be provided, but if you’d like to bring your own that will be great. We’ll be using draw knives, a fixed blade knife or razor knife, egg beater drill and brace with bits 1/4”, 3/8” and 1/2”- 5/8” , mallets, and 1/4”-3/8” mortise chisels.

Materials Fee

To ensure tight joinery Terry will prepare the rungs and dry them in advance. Materials fee $20 to be paid directly to the instructor. Hickory bark can also be purchased from the instructor for an additional $80.
